Fashion Editorial

The Brief: Interpret the word Distort as a theme for an editorial fashion shoot and produce a front cover image and double page spread for a fashion publication of your choice.
For me and many other members of the course, this was a challenge because we had to interpret the word distort for our images. The word distort has an array of meanings and means different things to different people. However after a lot of thought and research I finally came up with the ideas for my images and I decided to go for i-D magazine as my chosen publication. If you want to look into my research more look at the power point below.
Front cover Image
My front cover follows the styling of every i-D magazines front cover, the model with there eye covered. I decided to use a rose ring which I made my self, i think it looks like it is the models eye, and is the distort factor of the image,I hope you like it!

Moving Image

The Brief: Using your allocated title (retro steps) and the 'photographers Eye' as inspiration for a narrative and produce a 10 second moving image to advertise a pair/brand/style of shoe.
This was a follow on project from the shoe project, however this time I had to work in group with five other photographers we were all given a role, my role was cinematographer and music editor. I really enjoyed my role as cinematographer because I have a good eye for detail and enjoyed deciding on what to shoot and what shots to use.
We decided to go for a 80's theme and we wanted the film to be energetic and fun.
As a group we worked well together because we all had a similar idea in mind. Over all we were really happy with the end result, especially because it was our first go at moving image. I hope you enjoy it!

Shoe Project
17/02/14
The Brief: Using your allocated title (retro steps) as inspiration, create a studio portrait to advertise a pair/brand/style of shoe.
I was really excited when given this brief because an idea sprung to mind as soon as I received the title of 'Retro steps' I wanted to produce an image that give a sense of the 1950's. I did some research in to the style of clothing and shoes that were around at that time and decided to go for 1950's male fashion because of how sharp and interesting the clothes were. I also discovered that a big fashion was monochrome colours. With all of this research as a starting point my idea developed quite fast. I went into the studio with a clear idea of what I wanted to produce and I was chuffed with the result!
For the shoot I bought some brand new black shiny shoes, they were only cheap from Primark however they produced the results I wanted. I also used an old 1950's camera as a prop to add context to the image.
Below is my final image I hope you like it!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contextual Studies-Photography: Capturing the real or constructing the imaginary?
06/01/14
The Brief: The fact that the photograph appears to be a window on the world is the root of its fascination its fascination and the mediums greatest problem. Looking at the meaning of a photograph though the mediums history and critically discuss and debate in a written assignment (1500 words) the following question; Photography: Capturing the real or constructing the imaginary.
Research:
What I thought about the project.
Over all to be honest this has not been my favorite project so far. However i did really find doing the research for this project very interesting. It was a challenge for me because I have never had to write an essay like this before, I also had to use the Harvard Referencing System which I struggled with at first. I feel like I learnt a lot whilst doing this project, not only about essay writing, but also about the history of photography and the ethical and moral implications that come with photography.

Food Photography Project
25/11/13
The Brief: Produce a double page spread for an editorial publication, for example The Guardian/Observer or Waitrose Weekend, representing a Great British recipe.
I was really excited when I was given the brief for this project because its safe to say I love food and I have always been interested by food photography. We have to photograph British food and the first thing that came in to my mind was fruit scones with clotted cream and jam. So with the idea in mind I popped to the shops and got my props for the shoot.
As soon as I retured home I set up my shoot and began taking pictures. Through out the shoot I added and removed props to try and create the perfect image. I am very happy with the result!
I had to take two photos for this portrait so for my 'Lifestyle' image (below) I decided that I would photograph the ingredients of the scones. I thought this would be a good idea because now a lot of people are aware of what is in the food they are eating. So by having the image of the ingredient next to the scones I think it represents the home made healthy look that many food manufacturers are going for now.

Multiple Composite Project
04/11/13
The Brief: You are to create an advertising style image for a product of your choice. Your final image must be an A3 colour print that is a multiple composite of several images shot separately. Your image must include a person, and a location which plays around with a sense of reality and scale.
For this project I had to take an image on location and an image of a model in the studio and then merge the two together to make a seamless image. I was looking forward to this project because I have never done anything like that before. I had the idea of an Alice in Wonderland inspired image from the beginning so I decided to go for that idea.
To begin I started with my location shoot. I wanted it too look like a tea party so I wanted a table full of colourful food and tea cups. So I wondered down to my local supermarket to pick up a few props. These included cakes, sugar cubes and tiny marshmallows. I got home and set up my table and throughout the shoot I added and subtracted some props and eventually ended up with what I thought was the perfect location image for my idea.
The week after I took this I went into the studio and took the image of my model that I would later edit into my location image. I was more comfortable in the studio this time because it was my second studio shoot and I had a clearer idea in my head about what I wanted from the shoot.
After the shoot I started to edit my images together and I was really pleased with the result considering it was my first time ever doing a project like this!

Documentary Portrait
30/10/13
The Brief: Drawing upon the streets of Newcastle as inspiration and using the available light only, photograph a portrait of two people who you feel would make interesting portraits.
For this Project I had to take two images. One using shallow depth of field and one using great depth of field using only the light available. The people in the images must be wearing a hat and one must be male and the other must be female. I was looking forward to this because first of all I am more confident using natural light and because it meant I had the chance to meet new people and learn how to communicate with strangers.
I started by looking around the area around my house and noticed a girl wearing a bowler hat, I asked her if I could take her photo and then went on to explain about the project. I used her for my shallow depth of field image because of the location and the weather situation.
I decided to make the image black and white because I did not think the colours in the photo matched because they contrasted far too much.I also like the way that the background is blurred softly so you can really focus on the hat.
For my other photograph I decided that I would go to a popular dog walking area near to were I live. I knew that it had fantastic views and would work well for my great depth of field image.I had to approach a few people before finding someone who would agree to have their photo taken. I had the man facing away from the camera was because I wanted it to look as if he was looking out at the landscape enjoying the view. I was unsure whether or not to keep the image in colour or in black and white however I decided on black and white because you could notice more detail and I think it added to the emotion of the image. However I'm going to upload both to my blog and let you decide which you think is best!

The concept behind the distort part of my double page spread is the hair movement. Like i said I wanted the image to be really fun and i think having the model move around really expresses the fun of the image. I also think it works really well as an interpretation of the work distort. I hope you like the images!

Hat Project
23/09/13
The Brief: To produce a visually inspiring portrait using Mid to Low key lighting using a hat which you have constructed.
My first assignment was the hat project and basically I had to create a hat and take a 'visually inspiring portrait' using Mid to Low key lighting. I was excited to begin the project because I instantly had an idea in my mid of what I wanted to do.
My first assignment was the hat project and basically I had to create a hat and take a 'visually inspiring portrait' using Mid to Low key lighting. I was excited to begin the project because I instantly had an idea in my mid of what I wanted to do.
I decided that I was going to create a flower hair band with a small birdcage veil similar to the ones Lana Del Rey wears. I thought this was a good idea because I knew I could make it in the time frame I was given and because I thought that I would be able to create a lot of narrative with the hat and the mid/low key lighting.
So with my idea in mind I set of on my mission around the haberdasheries of Newcastle to find my materials to create my hat. I managed to purchase everything I needed for a small price and it only took about three days to make, and it was safe to say I was very happy with my handy work!
When it came to shooting the hat and the model I was quite nervous because it was my first ever time working in the studio. However I think it went quite well for my first studio shoot! I wasn't too pleased with the end result because I felt like the image lacked narrative, however even though I wasn't too pleased I felt like I had learnt a lot about studio photography and it helped me to improve my work.
